Die Herausforderung
Requirements for inspections of power presses are covered in Part 4 of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) – Safe use of power presses. This requires that power presses with automatic, photo-electric or interlocking guards are thoroughly examined every 6 months.
Power presses with fixed guards or enclosed tools should be thoroughly examined every 12 months.
Power presses and their guards and protection devices should also be thoroughly examined following installation and exceptional circumstances such as major modifications or repairs, serious damage and substantial change in use.
Thorough examinations should be carried out by a “Competent Person”, who should have sufficient practical and theoretical knowledge and experience to detect defects or weaknesses and assess their importance.
Machines with guards are covered in Part 2 of PUWER and should also be inspected regularly although the frequency is not specified.
For paper guillotines, injection moulding machines and woodworking machinery there are also Guidance Notes which include periodic inspections.

Part 4 of PUWER requires an “Appointed Person” to inspect and test guards and protection devices within 4 hours of a working period and after setting, re-setting or adjustment of its tools.
